Helping to promote conservation, education, and provide rescue services for reptiles and amphibians since 2015.
Our mission is to promote the welfare and conservation of reptiles and amphibians through education, rescue, and rehabilitation. We strive to increase public understanding and appreciation for these vital members of our ecosystem, and to inspire a sense of responsibility for stewardship of their natural habitats and captive care.
Through our initiatives, we are committed to ethical and sustainable practices and fostering a collaborative community who shares our passion for herpetology.
New Name, Same Mission
Who is RACR, and where did NCHS go?
Reptile & Amphibian Center of the Rockies
We are RACR.
-
It’s time to shed the old name: We’ve grown!
Our organization began in 2015 as the Northern Colorado Herpetological Society, a small group of reptile and amphibian enthusiasts who met to discuss their love of herptiles and the need for education about their captive care.
In 2017 we blossomed into a fully fledged 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and our mission expanded. In addition to our initial focus, we actively engage in the rescue of displaced captive herptiles. We have also committed to broader conservation efforts for these amazing animals in the wild. Recognizing this evolution, the term "society" no longer accurately represents our multifaceted activities.
The name change reflects our growth and dedication to involving our community in the conservation of reptiles and amphibians in the Rocky Mountain region.
-
We are amplifying our impact for native herptiles in Colorado by pursuing the establishment of a public facility for education, rescue, and rehabilitation services.
This space will serve as a rescue center and community hub, providing herptile enthusiasts with a safe space to ask questions, access resources, and actively engage in the captivating world of reptiles and amphibians. Additionally, the new space will serve as an educational destination for schools, providing immersive learning experiences for folks of all ages.
The increased space capacity will enable us to rescue more animals in need, furthering RACR's efforts to combat the symptoms of an ever-expanding reptile trade industry.
-
This expansion initiative will create hands-on volunteer opportunities, offering involvement with a diverse range of species.

Education, Conservation, & Rescue
Education
Educating the public about local reptile and amphibian species and their ecological importance can help us preserve our ecosystem and promote a sustainable future. We provide outreach and educational programs for all audiences to forward this goal. Learn about the wonderful reptiles and amphibians that inhabit our world, both locally and globally through our education programs and resources.
Conservation
We’re proud to be a part of the Northern Colorado community, serving our friends and neighbors. From partnerships with other non-profits (wildlife rehabilitators, education groups, conservation groups, and more) to donating our education programs to community groups and schools, we are committed to connecting with a wide variety of audiences.
Rescue
Our foster-based rescue program provides a unique resource to the often overlooked exotic pet population throughout Northern Colorado by accepting surrendered animals into our care, treating any of their medical conditions or health concerns, and then finding them adoptive homes.
